Being immersed in physical 'freedom' as a natural state, perhaps the kite would only 'know' of it by comparison if it were caged/trapped. Certainly the kite would struggle then to be free. And maybe try to avoid whatever circumstance permitted the entrapment?
It's a wonderful shot, it looks like freedom to me. The kite looks as if playing, dancing, waving even.
