XXIII

I love a girl more fickle than a straw: like other girls there's no relying on her faith more than the word of the mouse that fell from a beam into the beer.

The mouse leaped in the new-brewed beer, and what did the good gray cat do, but spring into the vat where the mouse drowned and lift up its head out of the beer? But the cat did not leap in lest the mouse should drown, but because of the oath he swore, when he was lifted out of the beer, to please the cat before returning up into the thatch. But when the mouse was out, he went up among the laths, and taking refuge in the roof, said nothing from up there.

"Mouse, keep your word : you've gone too far!"

"The oath I gave in the vat, does not bind me here: and a creature I trusted when I was drunk, I do not trust next day."
And so, my dear, there is no trust in mice, and so indeed Gwen, he who trusts them is deceived.

  1. Looking back, I should have expected it would all begin with such enigmatic words, from Sean, a man who plays with English like a cat with a mouse...

  2. Ah, Andrew,
what a surprise. Thank you for your kind words.

In retrospective it's amazing that I'd choose Dafydd ap Gwilym for my first attempt; just to check if it works and how it looks like.
On the other side: Seems it was meant to be.

  3. Glad you found it. It is interesting to look back and see how things began.

  5. I really don't know what happened to the date, noble Don, 'cause I remember to have read this prediction on Saturday, June 2nd, 2007.
Just amazing. How could you know?!

  6. My new steed Apocalypse is surprising me even more than I expected her too. She rides through time like a pony galloping across a field. We have taken a look at what lies ahead, but decided to retreat back to June 2013 meantime. We may see you there.

  7. By the way... what lies ahead... it was all rather chaotic... but Apocalypse seemed to fit in well enough.

I may tell the tale in a book some day. "Don QuiScottie's Apocalypse" ... although nobody would believe me, as usual. Sigh.

  8. However high I may rise, I'll always end up back at the bottom eh? And here I am again, in a different guise and after much more nonsense. I'll now start again, and the Don still rides along with me. Here we go... Come on Seanso! Be of good cheer, for something awaits, for sure...

    1. Right in time you arrive, polytropon, to cheer me up.
May your path bring you back here again and again, now and then.
And may what is awaiting us be ... interesting.

    2. Snakes & Ladders (Spiel der Schlangen und Leitern?). I have found a ladder that goes all the way to the seventh start. Will be up there in a moment.

  10. I (and we) are still here, I think, and up there too, at the top.

...tis a funny thing time... (until it stops (being funny) that is)

    [Word verification "was einflow". Hmm]

    1. You do see me surprised, Andrew. I do not ask for word verification, these days.
Just checked again. And yes, I do not.

    2. Yes you do. Or did, for me, and evertime up at the top too. But it won't ask you if you are logged in. Were you? Let's see what it asks me now...

Ah, it wants me to type 110. I think it switches itself on and off, being a robot (obviously)

    3. And then it did not accept 110, telling me I had typed it wrongly, so it set me the greater challenge of uelar. What next?

    4. And that last time it wanted "Exhas"

Ha. It knows it has ex(h)asperated and exha(u)sted me

      Good night to you both

  13. June 2020 approaches, strangely. I just thought I should travel back in time again to warn you. Probably best not to tell you what I found when I travelled forwards from 2020 though. The peace of the night to you.

    1. Ah, good to see you back in the present. Unsaddle your steed Apocalypse now. Your faithful mare Rocinante will be delighted to slow you down, looking forward to an extra portion oat from a jolly good fellow on May 10th.

    2. Ah but which year? I am tempted to travel to 10th May 2021 "this year", if you see what I mean - not only might the pubs and restaurants be open again but on that day I also start collecting my State Pension (if I am alive - hmm... what will happen if I travel far enough forward on Apocalypse Now to discover a time when I am dead? A conundrum eh?). Rocinante is regarding Apocalypse Now with sneering suspicion, and quite right too. Anyway, today back up in 2020 we discovered a Perth Fish & Chip shop that is open, so my birthday celebrations may be out for a "fish supper" in the car beside the Tay with Dulcinea, followed by a few Belhaven Scottish Oat Stouts at home. That would suffice splendidly, in the circumstances. Will see you back up in 2020.
