Beers & Books CLXIII – John McGahern

The best of life is life lived quietly,
where nothing happens
but our calm journey through the day,
where change is imperceptible
and the precious life is everything.

    1. I am asked to tell you, dear Mark, that a mishap it was, no mistake. "Donkeys don't do mistakes. If at all, it was Sean's fault. And, by the way, I just can't resist the thrill."

    1. Ah, Mark, then you might like to read what I wrote twelve years ago: Meeting John McGahern.

    2. I take it, that was you in the narrative. You met Mr McGahern then, a privilege indeed.

  3. The purportedly Chinese curse 'May you live in interesting times' has always struck me as vicious. Calm journeys are much more to my taste.

    1. My journey having been quite exciting now and then, I do appreciate to live more quietly now and being offered the chance to get closer to reach what I call my ideal: the state of serene calmness and calm serenety.

  4. Jings I could've done with a "calm journey through the day" today, instead of the conflict and noise that ensued (outside of the home and family, not inside, I should add). When I feel that walking heavily all over some metaphorical eggshells is appropriate, rather than best avoided, I can certainly generate some cacophonous crunching. There will be further crunching to follow...

    1. I just did go on, sending out a very crunchy email just in case my verbals were insufficiently crunchy and to ensure that my attitude to the eggshells is permanently recorded in the higher educational institution to which it was directed... I am heading in there for more of my part-time lecturing tomorrow, wearing my heaviest boots...

    2. May your heaviest boots be heavy enough ... and not miss their aim(s).
