Drink Drive Campaign

ORKNEY police stopped 11 drivers during Northern Constabulary's two week Safer Summer campaign, but thankfully* none tested positive for drink driving.
Full article here.

Imagine, dear readers: During their campaign Orkney's busy Policemen within two weeks stopped 11 (in words: eleven) drivers.
Blimey!! That's one driver every 30 hours 54 minutes and 54 seconds!!!

Didn't I save a drop of Highland Park for special moments?
Ah. Yes. ...

Here's to the brave Orkney policemen,
to Sergeants Pluck and MacCruiskeen
and the busy bees of Orkney Today. Sláinte!

* 'thankfully?! I thought it was a Drink Drive Campaign!

  1. I wonder how much money that campaign cost!!

We need to remove the cost of the whisky before we do the calculation ;-)

  2. Do British policemen, like the American ones, also have a penchant for doughnuts? That might explain the low count.

  3. Aaaah.....but have you considered how many cars and policemen there actually are in Orkney?

  4. Maybe it´s just an innocent hobby of these policemen.

  5. CherryPie,
as you mention the Whisky: the cost of planning seem to have been the most cost-intensive part of the whole campaign.

not sure. The Orkney policemen I once had the pleasure to meet were very friendly and seemed absolutely relaxed.

well, if every fourth Orknian (on the main island) has one got one, there should be at least 4,000 cars. As for the number of policemen: Once I knew, but I have forgotten.

How many policmen, do you think are needed to control eleven drivers within one fornight? :)

now that you would mention it ... :)
There might also be another reason: In order to save money for this very campaign some years ago they sold the cars to their collegues on the Shetland's and since became one with there bicycles.
The effect has been scientifically described my Sergeant Pluck: "The gross and net result of it is that people who spent most of their natural lives riding iron bicycles over the rocky roadsteads of this parish get their personalities mixed up with the personalities of their bicycle as a result of the interchanging of the atoms of each of them and you would be surprised at the number of people in these parts who nearly are half people and half bicycle."

  6. If the policemen only have bicycles, maybe that's why they find it so hard to stop drivers in cars?

  7. Well Sean, now that you tell..... I was just looking at my bike and i thought it was maybe because i´m making those collages.... but then i saw myself in the mirror and.....

  8. @Ruth,
That's why their hobby is so sportsmanlike.
